began to study Wood Technology in 1953 in Poznan. In those days
it was the only opportunity to develop his passion for design. Due to the
record of his imprisoned father - who was a member of Polish anti-communist movement – which hampered his plans of R. Ferens to study architecture in Wroclaw.
After the college, the designer worked for furniture factories and local design units in Poznan, where he created a lot of different designs, ranging from sideboards, wall units and chairs, to interiors and wooden toys. Despite many awards and recognition, the official designer’s title was denied him by the communist state for years.
In 1984, after decades of efforts, the Ministry of Culture and Art conferred gave him official rights to practise a profession of artist-designer upon Romuald Ferens.
Designed in 1980 by Romuald Ferens
in Poland, the LOTOS chair was submitted for competition at the Basel Furniture Fair
in Switzerland. The design won the main prize and was recognized as a functional and modern seating solution. The judging panel was fascinated by the shape and innovative function, which reminded people of the blooming lotus flower...
However, the chair has never been manufactured continuously, as the martial law was introduced in communist Poland
in 1981 and the economy collapsed, therefore nobody was really interested
in making this unique design alive.
For the first time ever, LOTOS will be produced continuously in 2017
thanks to POLITURA.
